DkA – Smoke & Whiskey [Play Label Records] (06/07)

Antoine Verbrugge is better known by his Artist alias DkA. He releases on a number of labels but really comes correct with two tight new tracks to form the tenth EP on Play Label Records. His great work also gets remixed by Daso to make for a fantastic EP overall.

Opener Smoke & Whiskey is just that – filled with moody basement atmospheres, strong kicks and mature flavours, it lingers long on the palette and really gets under your skin. It is classy and patient and builds to a nice subtle peak with its thin pads and muted grooves. Daso flips it into a menacing, spine tingling main room number with rippling chords running over the kicking drums. It’s good but the original is better. Lastly ‘Don’t Be A Sheep’ is way below the surface with humid pads, gently petting drums and zoned out vibes that recall the work of Fred P and his Soul People label. It is another standout cut that marks Play’s 10th release in style.
