Dole & Kom – Salto Mortale – (Acker)

Acker Records newest release comes from Berlin based duo Dole & Kom and it’s a record that clearly shows why these guys have been industry mainstays for the last twenty years. They produce three tracks of developed house music that all have their own uniqueness, and then throw in three remixes to really bulk up and beef out the release. First production is ‘Salto Mortale’ and its kicks us off with a real foot-stomping bass line that takes no prisoners, before lavish chords dive in and leave us with an effortless groove that really lingers in the memory for all the right reasons. Second production ‘Silence’ retains the groove with guitar-based chords playing over a percussive beat, but there’s a real grace to the track that is further enhanced by the luscious vocals that join us half way through. It’s a track with real emotion and spirit throughout. Final production is ‘Fly Bar’ that I feel is a great combination of the two previous tracks. It has a great soul and sway about it due to the oriental instruments involved, but also has an infectious bass line that encourages you to delve a little deeper into the dance floor. To complete the EP we have the three remixes. One a ‘Salto Mortale’ remix by René Bourgeois & Dan Caster, who take the track on a darker more unwinding path. What it loses from the original in groove, it more than makes up for in energy and is a resounding success. The other two are ‘Silence’ remixes by Mollono and then by Seth Schwarz. Both add more of a skippy and driven bass line to the original, with more energy and tempo, but keeping the grace that serves it so well. Overall, a fantastic listen.
