Federico Molinari / Nekes – Easy Faces / Feel the Rhythm – (Epilog)

The Epilog label has been responsible for putting out some really classy house and techno wares over the past while, but few of their releases can quite match up to the high points of this release. It comes at us from Federico Molinari and Nekes, two producers who are more than able to bring the heat in the studio. A casual glance at some of the labels these lads have released on is proof of that fact – and they certainly bring their A-game to the table on this most interesting release.

We get underway with Molinari’s contribution, the brilliant “Easy Faces”. An unusual gem, it’s both hypnotic and stirring and indicative of what can be done with but a few carefully chosen parts. Nekes’ “Feel the Rhythm”, on the other hand, is more concerned with the groove. A canny bassline hangs overhead, but it’s the various percussive slices and the booty-shaking vocal that help bring this one to higher planes still. Without doubt, it’s my highlight of the package. Culminating it all is “Halloweeen”, a curious track that is clearly made with unconventional mannerisms in mind. Clever guitar licks hang in the air, but they’re rarely developed on, as Nekes prefers us to focus on the track’s bare bones structure. It’s subtle and far from obvious, but we gather that’s the intention. A tale of three different and equally intriguing stories, Epilog’s latest is nothing if not a triumph throughout.
