Monte – Radical – (Jeudi Records)

Monte is one of the many jewels in the Jeudi crown and having released on the label a number of times before, he is now back with another new EP featuring two originals and two remixes by Washerman and Man Power. As a nerdish synth geek and being a big Carpenter fan, there is some real sonic craft in the four tunes here and they might just be the man’s best work yet. Radical is the first track and is slow burning synth masterpiece with broody, droning lines snaking their way through the churning drums. It is a great steeper and way to build tension. Man Power remixes and is someone who has had a fine 2015 with a debut album on Correspondent as well as tracks on many other labels. His version is even more frazzled and textured with some loose disco drums and jangling textures in there for extra balearic feels. Simpler is then Monte’s next one and is a really spine tingling number littered with tooting melodies and big dramatic synth sweeps that really will carry floors away on the groove. Washerman has been releasing since 1998 on labels like Drumpoet Community and here remixes in great style. His track is more elastic and lithe than the original, with bouncy rubber drums and tense, nerve keys building to a peak. It is a real standout cut that finishes off a great EP.
