Rebirth

My recent foray into the weird world of Captain Beefheart prevented me reviewing anything for the past month so I missed last month’s monster from the red-hot Italian label which saw Foremost Poets’ Johnny Dangerous planting his surgery-inspired intoning against a killer backdrop from Robytek and Shield [which also boasted a fabulous Farley and Rocky remix]. I’m determined not to let the same thing happen to this little beauty which really does put the lid on rebirth’s title as one of the top three labels of the year. Canada’s Rennie Foster, now based in Tokyo, puts the groove emphasis on a dustbin-lid whipcrack effect embellished by whooshy noises and deep chords before a haunting female vocal wafts in from the ether. The Youngsters’ mix adds chunkier momentum, warm prog-chords and space dub efx, eventually recalling early 90s Frankfurt outings on Eye-Q or MFS. The mighty Kiki does two: his End Of The Night Mix adding new strings and bassline while his Superdub hits a fantastic low-down throb-scape recalling the classic Murk dubs with that indefinable touch which Kiki applies to everything he does [like the undulating ruler-on-a-bottle riffs or a mongoose playing bongos on his bell-end]. There’s also useful beats and acapella for mischief purposes. Should all hose down a few floors this festive season. What a year!
