Dr Rubberfunk

Dr Rubberfunk – ‘Trouble Woman’ feat. Roachford (Steinski Remix) – Jalapeno
I’m never sure what the form is for plugging one’s own releases, but this is a biggie for me – not least because I got to work with Roachford, who turned in an amazing vocal, but also because the legendary Steinski agreed to do a remix. Like some crazed rhythm and blues steam train driven by Sly and Robbie with Nile Rodgers stoking the fire and Steinski in the Signal Box pulling all the levers, it’s a monster of a mix – and that’s despite my convoluted analogy. Amazing to have it on a record with my name on, a definite career highlight!

The Beekeepers – ‘Bee Funk EP’ – Jalapeno
Bristolian beat heroes Boca 45 and Parker have teamed up for this new project, and bring a suitably solid collection of tracks for their debut. Bass wobble, string drenched breakbeat and party hip hop – it’s all here!

Flevans – ‘Hold On’ feat. Sarah Scott (Hint Remix) – Tru Thoughts
Taken from the recently released album – “The 28th Devil” – a compilation of remixes of material from the Flevans album “27 Devils”, teamed up with remixes of other artists by Flevans himself. This one’s a cracker from fellow Tru Thoughts labelmate Hint, who nails down a rock steady bassline, some skipping piano and a beat as tough as you’ve ever heard.

9DW – ‘Black Coffee’ b/w Mackrosoft – ‘Vicoden Reality’ – Waxpoetics Converse 45 Series
Lovely little 7inch – 9DW come on like Wendy Carlos getting down with Clyde Stubblefield – super tough synth bass with glorious sounding live funk drums grooving underneath. I spent some time in a studio with a Mini Moog last year, and had alot of fun doing similar things – getting my subby Moog bass-on over the top of my live drum loops. On the flip Mackrosoft bust out the rhodes for some more vintage sounding electro-soul – Tonto’s Expanding Headband would be proud!

Floating Points – ‘Love Me Like This’ – R2 Records
Epic piece of downtempo disco, all squelchy bass and whooshing pads – a quality nouveau electronics workout, makes me want to buy a Juno and a Prophet 5 and not leave the house for a week …

Greg Wilson – ‘More From The Teenage Disco Vaults’
This came out in the spring last year, but it’s such a good set of tools that it’s been in my bag ever since. Mr Wilson certainly knows his way round an edit – blending the well known and less well known to superb effect. Plus he seems to have some of the greatest tambourine loops known to man!

Makoto + Kez YM – ‘Chameleon’ – Mukatsuku
Everyone from Organized Konfusion to Ashley Beedle has made use of the bassline from the coda of this Herbie Hancock classic, and this uptempo rework gives it plenty of dancefloor appeal.

Drawbar – ‘Broken & Battered’ (Dr Rubberfunk Remix) – Counterpoint
Bringing my own little disco twist to the sounds of Hammond nuts Drawbar – honoured to be featured on the ‘Drawbar Reorganised’ remix collection alongside the likes of Black Grass and JD73.

6th Borough Project – ‘Instruments Of Rapture’ – Lower East Side Sounds
Another great selection of DJ friendly edits, from the Motown sprinkled sub-100bpm house groove of Xavier’s ‘Do It To The Max’ to the fast and furious uplifting disco loopathon of ‘Planets (Revenge Of The Lost Groove)’, there’s something for all occasions.

Lucien’s Luck – “You Should Know!” (Love That Brass unreleased edit) – Killer Funk
Billy Brook’s ‘Forty Days’, source for A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘Luck Of Lucien’, gets a handy edit and a bite sized 7inch release – with extra guitar solo for the jazz nerds like me …

Dr Rubberfunk ‘Hot Stone’ will be released on January 18th 2010 on Jalapeno Records
