Shiftee’s Picks Week 12

Boom! Two times DMC World Champion brings us his essential weekend tunes…

What did I do last week?

– I played a show in Cincinnati called Gobble 17, which cured my growing list of ailments after traveling to 4 cities in 2 days.  DJing is better for you than Penicillin or back-iotomies.

– I ate turkey like a good American.

– I finished Haruki Murakami’s new book 1Q84, which I enjoyed thoroughly.

The Picks…

Author – Dashiki
Two wrongs don’t make a right, but two rights make a right.  I learned that in a book.  Here two of my favorite dubstep producers Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin team up for a deep collaborative project under the name Author.  If I was a professional writer, I’d probably be angry about the name, but I’m not.  I’m a professional sandwich chef, and so this track does nothing but delight me.

Birdy Nam Nam – Jaded Future

French turntable maestros Birdy Nam Nam drop the future music scratch vibes on this head nodder.  Sometimes even an apt baby scratch will take a song to the next level.  My favorite song on their new Defiant Order LP, and I even go so far as to say it’s my baby making music pick of the week.

Carrie Wilds – Somebody Save Me
Carrie Wilds is an incredible singer and songwriter.  She makes Celine Dion sound like Rodney Dangerfield.  I debuted two tracks from our forthcoming mixtape on my recent set on Rinse FM (http://soundcloud.com/shifteemusic/shiftee-live-on-rinse-fm-11-11).  Not to be biased, but this project is crazy: covers and originals from Carrie on top of dubstep, grime, and electronic beats.  Watch out for that dropping late 2011/early 2012.

Dev79 & Thrills – Between Your Legs
Bass-smiths Dev79 & Thrills’ forthcoming EP “Loose Joints and Blunt Objects” (Slit Jockey) is surprising and refreshing.  Super dance-y and heady club friendly joints from these two gentleman.  In “Between Your Legs,” their goal is clear.  They want you to put your head between your legs.  I’m not sure why they want you to do this.  This is in fact pretty gross, but I’ll damned if I can fault their clarity of purpose.

Jay-Z & Kanye West – Ni**as In Paris (Van Toth Bootleg)
As soon as “Ni**as in Paris” dropped, everyone and their mama made a remix of it.  Heck, my mailman, deli clerk, and grandmother all tried to play me their takes on the Jay-Z & Kanye banger.  The Van Toth bootleg is the best one I’ve heard.  Congorock dropped this at Webster Hall last weekend, and I immediately broke out into my patented Shiftee Shuffle.  Peep it here – http://soundcloud.com/vantoth/jay-z-kanye-west-n-words-in

Kingdom – Let You No
Kingdom’s “Dreama” EP is off the meat rack.  Like I went to Gristedes, went to the meat section, and boom his EP was sitting next to some t-bone steaks.  Let You No has an infectious melody, lovely use of space, and expert R&B vocal sample usage.  Out now on Night Slugs.

Rude Kid – Summer
Instrumental grime is my favorite genre of music right now, and Rude Kid is doing it as well as anyone.  The man has a sense of the seasons, having already released tracks called “Winter” and “Spring.”  I first heard “Summer” on the recent outstanding 4 hour Butterz takeover of Rinse FM, and this was one of my favorite tracks.  Finally got the track ID from my buddy Badman Shark, and whoa nelly it’s a banger!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UamHybxacI

Sepalcure – See Me Feel Me
“See Me Feel Me” is beautiful.  This is *drink peppermint tea while riding horseback through an enchanted forest while reading a book by the fire* music.  I open my forthcoming “Crossed Signals” mix for Cluster Magazine (out Dec. 5) with this track, but I enjoy all of the above.

Terror Danjah & DOK – Morph 2
Seriously the aforementioned 4 hour Butterz takeover of Rinse is the most inspiring thing I’ve heard in a long time.  It’s pretty much all I listen to anymore (download link here – http://www.multiupload.com/66YI2VV3IY).  Watch out for this movement in 2012.  “Morph 2” is a collaboration between two of the show’s contributors, and it’s a rump shaker.  Out now on Hyperdub.

Zomby – Labyrinth
Masked man of mystery Zomby is an intriguing character.  Just tune into his Twitter feed, and you’ll get a sense of his unique perspective.  He’s nevertheless one of the best producers out there, always making music that is emotive and driving.  His new Nothing EP is fittingly a stellar effort.  “Labyrinth” fuses styles on styles on styles to produce a hypnotic and original work.
