Planas ‘Back To Mine’

A personal collection for after hours grooving

Planas

“Here’s a selection of tracks I would be likely to play once the party has ended up back at mine. Depending on the route the night has taken my track list would definitely vary: in this situation I’m thinking low lighting, big sofas and some ice cold rum and mixer…

With late night music it’s the use of space (what the artist doesn’t say rather than what he/she does say) that draws me in most.

These are in no particular order.

King in My Empire ft. Cornell Campbell – Rhythm & Sound
Black hole bass, the tenderest of vocals from Cornell Campbell and a healthy dose of deep techno stabs, dub echoes and tape hiss.

Rain On Me – Planas ft. Ed Thomas
From my forthcoming album, The Long Game, I love what Eddie did with the vocals.

Gutted – Burial
I remember hearing this on Kode 9’s first Burial mix and being totally blown away by the atmosphere of his tunes.

Little Wing – Jimi Hendrix
Jimi was one of my earliest influences and I think Little Wing captures his ability to write, sing and play beautifully. His unique voice and the sound of the band take me back to when I first started playing guitar and wanted to be a rock star.

What You Need – The Weekend
The ultimate after dark tune, Abel Tesfaye sounds unbelievable and the backing track is pure sex.

Me and Those Dreamin’ Eyes of Mine (Jay Dee remix) – D’Angelo
Two of my favourite artists collaborate. The combination of D’s vocal harmonies and Jay Dee’s unique swing make this early hours head nod material.

Angel Eyes – Submotion Orchestra
Submotion are very close to my heart both as musicians and as friends. For me this is them at their sublime best.

Lotus Feet – Remember Shakti
This quintet play with so much feeling it hurts. The interaction between the musicians is almost telepathic. I love the version from “Remember Shakti Live 1&2” because it features Hariprasad Chaurisia on Bansuri (flute). I can imagine everyone falling asleep to this one, it’s so peaceful!

Oblique (feat. Frank Carter III) – Sabre, Stray & Halogenix
The most soulful slab of drum and bass I’ve heard in a long time. Elegantly restrained with a minimal but perfectly executed vocal.

All Is Full of Love – Bjork
When I first heard this it took me to another place altogether. Bjork sounds like an angel, the balance between electronic and acoustic elements is perfect, and those harp runs give me shivers every time
