Apart from ‘Go’, Moby’s best of pretty much ignores the fact he made several vital contributions to dance and ambient music the wrong side of 1998 – no ‘Hymn’ or ‘Move’ here, and ‘Feeling So Real’ is slipped in before the end. Instead Mute have chosen to concentrate heavily on the blues pilfering that made ‘Play’ such a success, and the softly anthemic way with a vocal that helped ’18’ secure such a strong selling profile in follow-up. Recent tracks such as ‘Lift Me Up’ have hinted at a recent return to uptempo form again, but while this is a good retrospective of Moby’s commercial successes it offers just a few of the many sides of his musical personality.
