Idjut Boys – ‘Cellar Door’ – (Smalltown Supersound)

The pairing of Idjut Boys and Smalltown Supersound is a marriage made in heaven – totally logical to have the two singing from the same slowed-down disco hymn sheet. It’s difficult to believe this is their first conventional artist LP, but it is – and it caps a career that has seen them at the front of party jams ever since their days with Glasgow Underground. ‘Cellar Door’ is classy throughout but is blissful too, knowing its way round the dancefloor with the effortless cool of the piano in ‘One For Kenny’, a beautifully done tribute to Kenny Hawkes. ‘Love Hunter’, meanwhile, is an extended jam that gets their familiar chugging rhythm up and running, while ‘Le Wasuk’ throws in an unexpected treat of freeform ska/reggae for good measure. Trust me, it works – as does the rest of this sundrenched album!
