Onur Ozer

Berlin’s renowned Watergate club launches its new mix series with one of techno’s most exciting talents. Onur, who pioneered the electronic renaissance in his home city of Istanbul, may not have the highest profile but anyone who encountered his initial releases then last year’s sublime  Kasmir album on Vakant will know that the man boasts a formidable talent and sound of his own; cerebral, intricate and uniquely alien in sound but connected with a booty-shaking undertow. His set here marries sympathetic sonic alchemists with his own outings like ‘Sahara’ and ‘Terpsichorean Ecvhoes’, weaving gems from names including Cassy, Jens Zimmerman, Cabanne, Sammy Dee, Jason Blakemore, Abonne, Ralph Sliwinski, Hector & Star, William Kouam Djoko, Dinky and Sensitiva into a rich, glowing carpet which really sometimes sounds like it was beamed in from another planet. Having said that, the Spanish guitar on Dewalta’s ‘Salgaro’ builds the atmosphere while Patrick Bauemel’s ‘The Roar’ comes over like bottled white noise insanity belched up from a throbbing Earth’s core. One of the best mix albums to be encountered in this most saturated of years.
