SONAR KOLLEKTIV

Another week brings another record overseen by half of Jazzanova, this one being a collection of early programmed rarities from their Sonar Kollektiv label put together by Alex Barck and Gerd Janson. As you’d expect this means some early synthesized work from the 1980s – a potentially horrendous concept but one that works rather well here. Propaganda and Special Touch work well as organic, pop based material, as does Ray Baretto’s ‘Stargazer’ with some hip-swinging funk. Brian Briggs’ ‘AEO’ is just weird, a combination of birdsong noises and a chorus over a surprisingly funky track – but the title number works best, Jean-Luc Ponty’s work a maze of textures that completely hypnotises the mind. Good stuff.
