Various Artists – Computer Incarnations For World Peace III Compiled By Jazzanova – (Sonar Kollektiv)

After a gap of seven years, Sonar Kollektiv return with one of the jewels in their crown. Where the first two instalments of ‘Computer’ were compiled by Gerd Janson, now it’s the turn of Jazzanova’s Alex Barck to choose – and he does them proud. The Calm’s Outerspect Mix of ‘Introspection’ is an early hit, with unusual prominence for the oboe, while the marimba-led ‘Mkwaju’ by the Mkwaju Ensemble is a real standout, tapping into the inspiration of Steve Reich as it winds its hypnotic path. Meanwhile the Quintus Project’s ‘Night Flight’ is a really nice and mellow 1980s-influenced instrumental, its improvised piano the cherry on the cake. Great to have Sonar Kollektiv well and truly back in the mix.
