Various Artists – Popcorn Exotica: R&B, Soul and Exotic Rockers From The 50s & 60s – (Croydon Municipal)

Unlike almost everything else I’ve reviewed this week the music contained within Bob Stanley’s next instalment of Popcorn series actually has the audacity to feature real instruments! Consequently, this can be a joy to behold with sense of taste and decency expanded to accommodate all walks of life. If you’re not already familiar with the concept then the clue is handily contained in the title and features unflinching, blistering music from the grinding R&B of Ornella Vanoni’s ‘Coccodrillo’ through to the melodrama of US Bonds ‘Time Ole Story’ to the gloriously kitsch, Latin infused ‘Angelina’ by Eddie Calvert, and Jack Medell’s unforgettable Trumpet led ‘Umbe’. So in other words never a dull moment to be had. And all recorded in relatively lo-fi stereo too!
