The Balearic spirit has always been something that is highly subjective, but we’ve always felt a kinship with the ethos of playing music across the board and going for a specific vibe. And that’s something which is probably easier to find elsewhere than a lot of Ibiza these days, from Croatia to Kuala Lumpur, which is where this compilation focuses on with Balearic bastion Jose Padilla at the helm.
The closest we’ve got to Malaysia is whooping as children when Gary Linekar smashed four past them in 1991, but we completely get the spirit of what this compilation is about. Our highlights include the languid ‘In your Space’ from 40 Thieves with it’s life affirming cowbells, and the woozy cinematic feel and expert flute of Greek duo Bonnie & Klein on ‘Carina’, but the whole thing makes us want to hop on a plane to the opposite side of the world and sup cocktails watching the Sunset at Marinis. Like we needed an excuse.
