Listening to ‘The Big Freeze’ is the musical equivalent of a night spent under the stars, with slowly shifting chord patterns, weather sounds and softly oscillating beats. If that all sounds a bit too new age then fear not, as the music never disappears up itself. This is due to the intelligent mixing of compiler Simon Berry, who knows when to switch direction or change mood. CD2 is more beat driven but enjoys a similar exalted state, thanks to the likes of Mint Royale, BT and Bliss – and both offer something off the beaten track.
