Fabriclive 56: Mixed By Pearson Sound / Ramadanman
Fabric

Fabric are exploring some interesting, beat-driven territory with their recent compilations, and this from David Kennedy, who operates under both Pearson Sound and Ramadanman, stretches the boundaries of what’s probably best labelled as UK bass music. With a lot of his own tracks making up the 30 inclusions here, he is able to work at his own pace – and to this listener’s surprise it takes the mix a while to get going, with some unexpected moments of quiet among the beats. Some of the inclusions will judder the speakers though, most notably Tiyiselani Vomaseve’s ‘Vanghoma’, while Joy Orbison and some of the Pearson Sound material have greater subtleties. Kennedy seems to work best when blending two or even three tracks against each other, standing back to admire the results. Best heard several times for its magic to come through, this is interesting and potentially innovative mixing.
