This has been out for a while but it’s important that Tru Thoughts’ 10th Anniversary doesn’t get overlooked, as they have made some fine music over the last decade. Hugely instrumental for them have been Alice Russell, Will Holland’s Quantic project and Nostalgia 77, with all well represented here. Russell and TM Juke combine on the gorgeous song ‘Hurry On Now’, while Milez Benjamin also impresses on CD1 with the slinky bass of ‘Chop That Wood’, not to mention the raw funk of the Hot 8 Brass Band. Quantic’s ‘Transatlantic’ is an early highlight of CD2, which also features a Prins Thomas reworking of ‘Mishaps Happening’. The real treats lie in the third disc, part of the special edition, where Asaxx head straight for the floor with filtered monster ‘Disco Bimbo’, The Bamboos give it some forthright funk with Lyrics Born at the helm for ‘Turn It Up’, while the brassy Flevans track ‘Second Bite’ easily combines ska and dub. A belated happy birthday, then, to a vibrant label.
