The Chemical Brothers – Go ft. Q-Tip – (Virgin EMI/ Astralwerks)

Stop the press. New Chemical Brothers single. Is it a) good? And b) resolutely underground, or aiming to POP? Personally, I love everything about this apart from the chorus, though even that’s beginning to change with the second listen. From the sassy, funky beats to the likewise bassline this thrusts the sort of confident rhythm at you that you can’t fail but to move too. There’s a deliciously trippy breakdown, fired-up percussion and of course Q-Tip’s commanding dialogue which equally gets under your skin. But back to the chorus and its sparkling melodies that feel refreshingly musical and in some ways unexpected as you get initially locked into the tough groove. Still, a surprise is always in store from The Chemical Brothers and long may that assertion continue.
