This is exactly the sort of record you want at about 6am on a hot summer’s night or morning, whichever end of the day you’re at. Imaginatively compiled, it kicks off with The XX and their beautifully restrained ‘VCR’, but allows itself to wander into slightly heavier, beat driven territory with the likes of Smith & Mudd and Project Sandro. Now and then some song based material wanders in to view, but the subtle grooves work their magic through the much loved Meanderthals and the Idjut Boys remix of Icasol’s ‘Ongau’. It’s also good to report the compilers throwing a few unexpected curveballs into the mix, as they do with the closing track, Animal Collective’s ‘Loch Raven’. It’s this sense of imagination and progression that makes the collection work as well as it does. Kick back and enjoy!
