SOUL JAZZ

Recently, Soul jazz have reared up from their exemplary reissue/compilation programme and thrust forth a bevy of killer dance twelves such as Capracara and the snail-friendly Rekid. JBP are four blokes from Tokyo who are onto something new, startling and out there. This wouldn’t sound out of place on Detroit Beatdown but, after the ghostly intro atmospherics, makes for the next planet aboard a snakey organ and manages to chart a terrain which manages to work in free jazz-tribal rhythms and shades of UR. There’s all sorts of extra-terrestrial life in here. The flip recalls Miles Davis’ ‘Bitches Brew’ and Tim Buckley’s ‘Lorca’ with its disembodied keyboards. A stunning little journey.
